What is the role of the library in schools?
The goal of our school library program is to promote the very best in children’s literature and instill the love of reading in students. Working collaboratively with teachers, we create interesting and engaging units that help children identify all the resources the library has to offer. This helps to improve research and computer skills, language development, the importance of digital citizenship and certainly not least a love of reading!
The library is also tasked with acquiring both print and electronic resources that support curriculum and connect with students to enhance learning. Our program teaches students how to find appropriate sources, evaluate them and think critically about the information they are receiving.
Most importantly the library encourages voluntary reading for enjoyment! Studies show that reading for pleasure can improve language skills much quicker and more effectively than structured lessons and grammar activities. A love of reading can help overcome many obstacles children may face.
